Khandua Facts from GI (Geographical Indications) Document: Origin of Khandua traces back to 12th Century AD and it is closely associated with Lord Jagannath Temple rituals at Puri, Odisha. Khandua is the Weave of the single largest cluster in Odisha at Nuapatna. Here, 10,000 weavers are present with approximately 6000 looms. The Weaves varieties are Nabarangi, Tarabali, Gitagobinda Bastra etc. Common Motifs are Star, temple, conch, rudrakshya, fish, chakra, lotus, swan, peacock, parrot, deer, elephant, horse, lion etc.
Animal Border sarees are very traditional sarees of Nuapatna, made since centuries. Our weavers have recently revived these classics! They are characterized by:
❤️ a thinner border (8.5 cm including single line golden rudrakshas) of tied & dyed weft animal patterns along top of saree
❤️ a thicker border (15 cm including single line golden rudrakshas) of tied & dyed weft animal patterns along bottom of saree
This Ambua Scot Khandua Silk Saree is a beautiful red blue Khandua silk saree with broad blue part on bottom containing 'ambua' or mango shape motifs while the red part on top has flower dumbbell motifs, all through body!
The anchal has many big animals like lion, elephant, deer & tiger, alongwith trees & flowers!! What a gorgeous work of ikat!
