Habaspuri Saree and Fabrics got GI (Geographical Indications) Tag in 2012-13. Habaspuri Saree Facts from GI Document: It has been woven by backward tribal weavers of Habaspur village, Kalahandi district. It is used as ceremonial bridal wear by local people. The traditional habaspuri saree has been originally woven with coarse cotton with less length and width- now it has diversified to finer cotton with standard size. Natural colors are used in the traditional weave. From the Bahada tree the “Matha” (raw silk colour) is got. From Khair tree, deep brown colour is obtained. From “Bija”, light brown colour is got and from “Babool”a reddish colour is got. Motifs used are fish, tortoise, flower, tribal wall art and tattoos etc. Presently, place of production has shifted to Chicheguda. Also, a version of it is being revived in Nuapatna. The current saree is woven in Nuapatna weaving village, by taking inspiration from Habaspuri traditional saree.
