Gita Gobinda Bastra 4 Mt (8 Haati)
Puri Jagannath Temple was constructed in 12th Century AD. Famous Odia Poet Jayadeba was also a contemporary of this time & had composed the popular "Geeta Gobinda" verses, describing pure love of Krishna for Radha.
It is said that Lord Jagannath Himself wrote some verses, coming in disguise of Jayadeba, in front of Jayadeba's wife, when the real Jayadeba had briefly left his writing place.
Jayadeba wanted to gift the completed work of Geeta Gobinda to Lord Jagannath. He wanted the Lord to be as close to his verses as possible. Hence, he devised an ingenious plan!
Using high skills of Nuapatna weavers, he got the verses woven on silk & gifted to Lord Jagannath! Thus was born "Geeta Gobinda Bastra" which the Lords have been wearing since then!
Earlier when Debadasi culture fluorished, the Debadasis would dance to verses of Geeta Gobinda sung in Odissi Classical music style, while the Lords draped in Geeta Gobinda Bastra would be entertained before they went to bed. With ending of Debadasi culture, though dance may be missed but still the Lords wear these Bastra before bedtime, every day.
The Lords wear Khandua silks each day of the week, of different colors.
