Nuapatna’s weaving tradition dates back to the 12th century AD and is closely associated with the rituals of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. As the largest weaving cluster in the state, Nuapatna is home to around 10,000 weavers and 6,000 looms, and is renowned for its mastery in single ikat. This black dobby single ikat fabric, known as ‘Dobby Pasapali,’ features delicate golden buti lines created using the dobby technique, combined with traditional pasapali patterns. Production begins with the intricate tie-and-dye process, or bandha, carried out over hundreds of metres by two to three weavers, followed by precise manual alignment of the dyed threads. These black threads form the warp, while white weft threads are set on a powerloom, enabling quicker production without compromising on design—unlike the more labor-intensive handloom method. This technique makes the fabric more accessible and affordable, while preserving its artisanal essence—making this beautifully crafted men’s kurta a perfect blend of heritage, craftsmanship, and value.
