Nuapatna’s weaving heritage dates back to the 12th century AD and is deeply connected to the rituals of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. Nuapatna is the largest weaving cluster in the state, with around 10,000 weavers and approximately 6,000 looms, and is renowned for its expertise in single ikat weaving. This particular fabric is a black dobby single ikat, known as ‘Dobby Pasapali’—featuring fine golden buti lines created using the dobby technique, alongside traditional pasapali patterns. The production process begins with the tie-and-dye method, locally called bandha, carried out over hundreds of metres by groups of two to three weavers. After dyeing, the threads are carefully dried and manually aligned with meticulous mathematical precision. These black bandha threads are then used as the warp on a powerloom, with white threads as the weft, allowing for efficient production of hundreds of metres of fabric. This mechanized process saves time and reduces the physical strain of traditional handloom weaving, making the fabric more affordable while preserving its artistic integrity. Choose this beautifully crafted, high-quality men’s kurta for an elegant, affordable piece of wearable heritage that’s sure to impress.
