Nuapatna’s weaving tradition dates back to the 12th century AD and is closely associated with the rituals of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. As the largest weaving cluster in the state, Nuapatna is home to approximately 10,000 weavers and 6,000 looms, and is known for its expertise in single ikat weaving. This particular fabric is a black dobby single ikat, popularly referred to as ‘Dobby Pasapali’—characterized by fine golden buti lines created using the dobby technique, alongside traditional pasapali patterns. The production process begins with the tie-and-dye technique, or bandha, which is carried out in advance over hundreds of metres by two to three weavers working together. After dyeing, the threads are carefully dried and manually arranged with painstaking mathematical precision. These black bandha threads are then set as the warp on a powerloom, with white threads as the weft, enabling faster and more efficient production. This method reduces the physical strain and time required compared to traditional handloom weaving, making the final product more affordable without compromising on its artisanal appeal. Choose this beautifully crafted, high-quality men’s kurta to add a touch of tradition and elegance to your wardrobe—at a price that’s truly accessible.
