Indian spices are much demanded the world over, not just for their quality, flavour and aroma but also for (much of) their organic origin. Trade history of the world says that India has been the greatest exporter of spices, silks, fine textiles, gems, arts since the ancient times.
In Odisha state of eastern India especially, Kandhamal district has been declared an AEZ (Agricultural Export Zone) due to the fine quality organic spices like turmeric, ginger, arrowroot, mustard, tamarind etc. produced here which are much demanded worldwide. Tribals have traditionally used organic farming techniques on Kandhamal’s fertile hill slopes to produce the finest quality spices.
Similarly, in various largely tribal districts like Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj etc. many different organic spices are grown like cardamom, black pepper, fenugreek, bayleaf, nutmeg, fennel, cumin etc. Push by the state government in this direction is a must – Creating Odisha as a Spice Capital
