On 7 November 2025, Utkalamrita- the World’s First Odisha GI Store, hosted a truly special event: the first-ever “Raag at Utkalamrita.” Surrounded by 17 of Odisha’s 26 GI products, the store transformed into a vibrant cultural space where heritage, music, and community came together in harmony.
A Rare Musical Confluence
Conceptualised by Founder Directors Ms Amrita Sabat and Dr Anita Sabat, the evening brought together two classical traditions, Carnatic and Odissi music, on one platform.
The theme, “Understanding Carnatic & Odissi Music,” was beautifully explored by two stalwarts:
● Dr Vasumathi Badrinathan (Carnatic)
● Dr Mitali Chinara (Odissi)
Through insightful explanations and captivating live renditions, they highlighted the history, nuances, and charm of both musical styles, offering the audience a rare and enriching experience.
Sitar Strings of Legacy
Adding depth to the evening was a soulful sitar performance by Sri Jagannath Bisoyi, the guru of the founders’ late mother, Smt. Pramodini Sabat. His music filled the space with grace and nostalgia.
Engaged Audience & Odia Delicacies
The rasikas listened with rapt attention, followed by a lively Q&A session that sparked thoughtful discussions. The evening concluded with delicious pithas lovingly prepared by Smt. Bidulata Jena of Tiara Kitchen.
Weaves, Warmth & Wonderful Connections
Later, Dr Vasumathi and her husband explored Utkalamrita’s weaves and selected a stunning Sambalpuri Pasapali silk saree and a beautiful multi-sakta cotton saree, a gesture that touched everyone.
A Promising Beginning
The inaugural Raag at Utkalamrita was a heartfelt success- an evening celebrating Odisha’s culture, music, craft, and community.
